　　People's shopping habits depend more on the age group they belong to than any other factors. To what extend do you agree or disagree?

　　Statistics over people’s shopping habits is now catching attention from the public. The data could be very useful in many aspects: helping consumers decide “what to buy this week/month”, providing information for advertisers over “what should we promote” and topic to comment or mock for now. Some people even specifically focus on what middle-aged or senior residents choose to prove that “age is the key factor of (awkward) shopping habits”. Though their words sound mean, these people do have a point. My reasons are as follows.

　　First, age affects the function of products that people tend to choose. The function of a product directly dominates how it should be used, who would most probably be using it. Naturally, even for the same product type, people in different age groups tend to prioritize distinctive functions. A perfect example for this is the smart phone. Most young adults are crazy for iPhone. However, the functions are not that friendly to many senior users, so they tend to choose easy-to-use Android phones. In this case we do not have to mock grandmas and grandpas as “clumsy old fashioned”, they just need a user-friendly phone to contact their families. This also explains why senior residents tend to love Nintendo other than PS4, Xbox or PC games at home.

　　Secondly, people born and grow within a certain era tend to have their own styles, which also serves as a key factor for product preference. The Americans have Elvis in the 50s; British people have The Beatles in the 60s; Chinese youngsters have Chairman You-know-who throughout the 60s and 70s. These icons are printed in their mind and would affect their tastes over food, what to wear and even what to sing, maybe until the end of their lives. Therefore, it is just normal for mom and dad to wear army-brad style outfits and maybe listen to Yellow submarine while we listen to Alan Walker and wear Vans.

　　I do believe there are people always keeping themselves updated with the latest fashion or trend within a certain industry. However, what we are discussing is on a macro level of consumer behavior. Therefore, we have to look at what most people tend to do. If we think in this we, we have to say that age group is one of the most significant factor for shopping.

　　Above all, no matter what mom’s choice is, no matter what grandpa’s favorite jacket looks like, we should respect their choice and love them. Do not get ourselves judgmental, my friend, they simply have something in their youth to memorize, like you and me.
